What is thermal vein closure?
Thermal vein closure has been the mainstay of minimally invasive vein treatment for nearly the past decade. The ClosureFast procedure is performed using a catheter that is equipped with a heating element and connected to a radiofrequency (RF) generator. Prior to activating the heating element, the saphenous compartment, which surrounds the vein, is filled with a liquid referred to as tumescent anesthesia. Tumescent anesthesia acts as a heat sink to protect surrounding tissue from excessive temperatures during treatment.
Is thermal vein closure clinically proven?
Good-quality evidence supports the use of the ClosureFast thermal ablation systems for long-term varicose vein closure. The VeClose study demonstrated complete vein closure in 97.0% of individuals treated with thermal ablation at one year following treatment,ᴬ and additional clinical studies reported similar results.
